reviewed The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings, #1)

J.R.R. Tolkien: The Fellowship of the Ring (Paperback, 1999)

The Fellowship of the Ring is the first of three volumes of the epic novel …

He looked at maps and wondered what laid beyond their edges.

This book is amazing. While the Hobbit felt like a fun adventure in the woods, takes things up a notch and feels like a proper epic quest. My favorite quote by far from the book happens early on, | Frodo was beginning to feel restless, and the old paths seemed too well trodden. He looked at maps and wondered what laid beyond their edges.

The book meanders through the story, but at no point does it feel dull or slow. Tom Bombadil is also a great addition to the book and I'll fight anyone who states otherwise.

I listened to the Andy Serkis narration and he absolutely knocked it out of the park.

reviewed Onyx Storm by Rebecca Yarros

Rebecca Yarros: Onyx Storm (Entangled: Red Tower Books)

Brave the dark. Get ready to fly or die in the breathtaking follow-up to Fourth …

It was alright

This is a tough book to review. I really enjoyed the first two, with the Violet and Xaden drama getting old pretty early on into Iron Flame. But this book it was unbearable. The characters did poke fun at it a bit which was nice, but it still continued and was a real drag on the story.

The story was well done and had some good twists I wasn’t expecting to see, and there were some truly heart wrenching moments.

spoilers ahead

Quinn’s death made me cry, which I wasn’t expecting. A lot of the character deaths in this series had been not a huge deal, but this was so well done it hit me hard.

Andarna leaving was super sad and I felt for her in that whole conflict, that part was really well done.

The ending with Xaden leaving and Violet married to him was good but also …

reviewed The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings)

J.R.R. Tolkien: The Hobbit (2002, Houghton Mifflin)

In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty, dirty, wet …

A lovely adventure

This book is so fantastic, and the narrator Andy Serkis knocked it out of the park.

minor spoilers below

I read this for the first time several years ago, it was the start of my love of reading as an adult.

This time around, I listened to the audiobook and it was even better than the ebook I read.

The story is simple but amazing. Each chapter flows into the next with excitement lurking around every corner. Watching Bilbo become the hobbit he is destined to be is so enjoyable. Some of it is a little silly and a little dated, but it is a midgrade book from the 1930’s so it gets a big pass.

I forgot how many songs there were in the book, but thankfully the narrator did them justice and made them really enjoyable.

My favorite scene is still the spider fight in the forest.
