Arjan Boltjes reviewed Footnotes in Gaza by Joe Sacco
Depressing portrait of Gaza, past and present
5 stars
Although present is not entirely true - it's more the present of 2005-2009 - in this work Sacco brings forth a detailed depiction of Gaza at that time, but also of the forgotten massacres that took place in November 1956. Based on eyewitness accounts, diligently gathered during his stays in the region, Sacco puts together a compelling and heartbreaking work of what happened in Khan Younis and Rafah. Including all the if's and but's than come with eye witness accounts, and a lot of time having passed.
His realistic black and white drawings help getting a good view of things, people, and happenings, while his narration brings and keeps everything together.
A work of great importance, albeit extremely depressing both when looking at the past and the present.
