Membrii echipajului Ares 3 ajung pe Marte pentru o misiune programată să dureze două luni, dar o furtună puternică le dă planurile peste cap și sunt nevoiți să părăsească planeta după doar câteva zile. Însă numai cinci dintre cei șase membri ai echipajului se vor lansa spre Pământ. Mark Watney, pe care ceilalți îl cred mort, rămâne singur, cu resurse limitate de apă și de hrană. Și astfel pornește într-o uimitoare cursă pentru supraviețuire, reușind să facă ceea ce nimeni până atunci nu ar fi crezut că este posibil pe o planetă fără viață. Inteligența și umorul, stăpânirea de sine și ingeniozitatea îl vor ajuta pe Watney să facă față rând pe rând problemelor aparent insurmontabile. Dar va reuși el să se întoarcă teafăr pe Pământ? Și de unde îi poate veni salvarea?

And probably at least semi realistic? Didn't like it as much as Project Hail Mary by the same author. This sorta read as a sequence of "oh crap, another thing went wrong" problems, followed by solutions. I'm certain this is realistic - or even still overly optimistic, given what they were surviving through - but kinda made for an overly long, repetitive narrative. I suspect this is part of why they cut some of these out of the movie (and to save time, but also it got repetitive). Nevertheless, a fun read if you enjoy sci-fi that sticks close to contemporary science.

Really intriguing tech short story. Read it twice.
Really enjoyed this book. The presentation was interesting, it had a good sense of humor, and definitely kept my attention. I really enjoy science fiction that focuses on the science part, and this fit the bill. Definitely would recommend.
Great read. Jumped right in and never really slowed down. Love the format, as well as how much info you actually don't get, such as about his life before he went to Mars. Ready for the movie.
