American Higher Education in the Twenty-First Century

This is an impressive collection of academic essays on the history, present, and future of American higher education (although there is a chapter that considers international institutions). While there is some analysis here, most of it is historical retrospective. The last chapter by Gary Rhoades on the interaction between markets, the state, and higher education institutions is particularly good.
